so sore

Posted under movies, music, punk, random by patrick

I keep royally fucking up this website. it’s starting to piss me off how technical wordpress is, and how I have to keep upgrading the code. I still can’t regularly get videos to embed in the site either. Obnoxious..

On a lighter note..

Things I’m excited for, part 2

- Valentines day (first time i’ve been excited about it in a while)

- Neck tattoos

- This down-hill skateboarding video

- Jason Dill’s section in Mind Fields

- Wisdom In Chains show on the 28th

- Step Brothers is fucking hillarious. Can’t believe I slept on this. My “every 3rd Will Ferrell movie” philosophy has failed me.

- Like Bats

get siked!

The Exploding Hearts

The town I most associate with hippies and Poison Idea, Portland has produced some excellent music in the past 5-10 years. The Riffs, Soda Pop Kids, Defiance, and The Exploding Hearts have all seemed to dry themselves off long enough to put out some quality records.

The Exploding Hearts formed in 2001 and fused influences from The Buzzcocks, The Jam, Generation X, The Boys, and The Real Kids. They made music so catchy you couldn’t help being in a good mood, and it’s exactly the type of music you wouldn’t expect. At the time, the Hardcore / Street Punk scene had all but taken over, but The Exploding Hearts were a band teenagers could relate to with songs about love and failed relationships. They put out 1 full-length in April, 2003 titled “Guitar Romantic” that’s some of the catchiest power pop these ears have ever heard. It’s easy to dismiss the band as just a revivalist 1977 punk band, but there’s so much more behind the stretch jeans and leather jackets. They seemed to fully understand what made their sound work. They were playful, but had an intense and confident quality that made them so relatable that you felt like you knew them. They were the guys you hung out with, struggling with life and love, just like you were. The band was gearing up for an anticipated nationwide tour when they went on a weekend tour down the West Coast.

Tragically, the band was involved in an accident, a mere 2 months after their albums release, en route from a show in San Francisco. 3 of the 4 band-mates’ lives were taken when their van lost control and rolled on Interstate 5. The surviving member, guitarist Terry Six, went on with 3 ex-Riff’s to form The Nice Boys in late 2004.

Dirtnap Records released the aptly named Shattered in 2006, which consisted of alternate mixes and previously unreleased material recorded during the bands entirely too short existence.

shit!

Posted under music, punk, random by patrick

Well, hello faithful DNW readers! I’ve been one busy dude, let me tell you. There have been plenty less-productive activities as of late, for which I apologize. I’ve been neglectful, and feel a deep empty inside for being so selfish. Like a dead-beat dad to his bastard child, I’ll reward your patience with an entry sure to quench your undeniable thirst. The inevitable follow-up on:

Every now and then, I come across a band that down right pisses me off. The King Khan & BBQ Show is one of them. This 2-piece (1/2 from Montreal, 1/2 from Berlin) is so fucking good, it makes you wonder why there’s so much other boring shit being made. They make other music worse, and subsequently, unlistenable. For example:

I feel like an asshole comparing them to anyone, or even stating their influences. What I DON’T mind saying, is they sound like a 5 piece band. How the fuck you sing, play rhythm guitar, and percussion is beyond me. That’s just Mark Sultan. I don’t get it. That dude sounds like some doo-wop, punk rock blues guy from New Orleans. And King Khan? His guitar sounds like a god damn junk yard watch dog. They’re such a good combination of Doo-wop, garage, punk, blues, and straight up rock & roll that I honestly can’t say enough good things about them. Dig it before all those Pitchfork scenster dorks try to claim it first.
